The display or screen is a fundamental component of any electric bicycle; it is the on-board computer, the fundamental device that controls all the functions of the bicycle.
They are normally delivered already installed on the bicycle when purchased and are usually correctly configured at the factory, so it is not advisable to manipulate them or make changes without knowing how to use them. This could cause damage to its operation.
There are many types of displays on the market and each manufacturer uses the one that best suits each bike. In general they all have similar functionalities:
1. – Mark the km, both total km (to know how many km you have ridden since you bought the bike) and daily mileage (very useful to count the mileage of each trip).
2. – Check the assistance levels of the electric bike. Most bikes usually have between 5 and 7 levels of assistance, depending on the brand. The level should always be selected according to the cyclist’s physical shape, the terrain to be ridden and the desire to pedal … Many displays also offer the walk mode option, a practical function that allows you to start from 0 when, for example, you want to start climbing a slope or to cross a crosswalk with the bike in step.
3. – Control the speeds in order to be able to select the appropriate one according to the terrain on which we are moving.
4. – Measure internal parameters of the bike, the temperature or voltage of the controller and the battery, the diameter of the wheel, etc… it will depend on each specific brand the meaning of each one of them.
5. – Measure the speed at which you ride, and do not forget that by law all electric bicycles are limited to a maximum speed of 25 km/h. This limit must not be exceeded in any way and normally once it is reached the motor stops assisting to automatically switch to pedaling mode only. That is, until the speed is reduced again to 25 km/h.
*All displays are usually placed on the handlebars of the bike, so that they are easily accessible while riding.
They usually have an on/off button and the display should always be backlit, to make it easier to see the data, even in the sun.
Maintenance is usually simple, clean and keep dry. Avoid scratches or bumps. Most of them are already LED screens, with a really long life. Always check that the wiring is well connected, no kinks or bites.
In case of breakage or blow, it is always recommended to go to the manufacturer to get a similar model and that in any case is always compatible with the bike, taking into account that it must fit perfectly in the electronic circuit (must be compatible with the motor and controller).
If at any time a fault occurs in the bike, the display usually indicates an error code that will be very useful when looking for a solution. Do not forget to indicate it to the technical service of the brand when you contact them!
