Electric bicycles are a fast, quiet, environmentally friendly and healthy vehicle. And increasingly lighter, but why does an electric bike weigh so much?
The answer is really simple: an electric bike needs two essential components for its operation, which are the motor (3 kg approx.) and the battery (3.5 kg approx.) and that is precisely what weighs the most and is also what makes the difference with respect to a conventional bike.
From a research and development point of view, one has to ask whether it is worth the effort to make a lighter (and much more expensive) bike if you can’t reduce the weight of the motor or the battery.
Where the weight of an electric bike will be most noticeable is on a climb, but for that we have a motor and several modes of assistance that will greatly facilitate the climb.
In short, the weight could be a drawback only if you have to carry the bike up a flight of stairs or put it in a trunk. Although in these cases, you may well opt for a folding electric bike, much lighter than you think.
An electric bike will allow you to ride longer distances, regardless of your age, physical condition or experience on a bike. The motor will help you in those moments when it is more difficult to get there and you will select the level of assistance you need in each case.
